PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.—Some civilian workers at Peterson Air Force Base have submitted a petition and a union grievance over the removal of a picture of President Barack Obama at the commissary.
Commissary employee Lavonda Bacon says the picture was on a sign listing the store’s Presidents Day hours.
She says employees were told a customer complained that Presidents Day is only for George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, not current presidents.
Bacon says the day is meant to honor all presidents. She suspects racism was behind the complaint.
The petition asks for an investigation into whether the environment is hostile toward racial minorities.
The commissary manager and a Peterson spokesman didn’t immediately return calls.
