The Mountain West Conference on Monday named Wyoming senior Brandon Ewing its basketball co-player of the week. He was joined by Utah’s Luke Nevill.

In home victories last week over Nevada-Las Vegas and Texas Christian, Ewing, a 6-foot-2 guard, became the second player in MWC history to score more than 2,000 points in a career. He is the third Wyoming player to reach the milestone.

DU freshman makes national team.

U.S. Under-20 men’s national soccer team coach Thomas Rongen named University of Denver freshman Sam Garza to the team’s 20-man roster for the 2009 CONCACAF Championship in the age division. Garza, a forward, scored the only goal in the U.S. team’s victory over Canada on Dec. 22. The U.S. will open CONCACAF play March 6 against Jamaica in Bacolet, Tobago. A semifinals appearance would net the U.S. team a trip to the U-20 World Cup in Egypt in September.

DU women’s golfers ninth in Mexico.

The University of Denver women’s golf team shot a 25-over-par 313 in the second round of the Arizona Wildcat Invitational at the Nicklaus Legacy Course at the Peninsula Golf Club in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico.

The Pioneers have a two-round total of 609, leaving them in ninth place. They trail tournament leader UCLA by 27 strokes.
