Catholics are making midweek stops at church today for Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent.
Lent is “a season of penance, reflection, and fasting” leading up to Easter, according to the web site .
The foreheads of people honoring Lent are marked with ashes to symbolize their penance and “spirit of humility and sacrifice.”
Easter this year falls on Sunday, April 12.
