MESA, Ariz. — The Dodgers have made another offer to Manny Ramirez, a two-year deal calling for $25 million this season and $20 million for the next — providing the slugger chooses to exercise the second-year option.
The proposal is similar in dollars to the Dodgers’ first offer to the free-agent outfielder this offseason, a $45 million, two-year deal with a buyout or a club option that was ignored by agent Scott Boras and later withdrawn by the team.
With this offer, Ramirez could stay with the Dodgers in 2010 for a $20 million salary or become a free agent again.
A-Rod homers in spring debut
DUNEDIN, Fla. — Alex Rodriguez was booed, then homered in his first game since admitting he took performance-enhancing drugs.
The Yankees slugger started the spring training season with a two-run homer and two walks at the Blue Jays’ ballpark. The third baseman left the exhibition opener in the fifth inning.
Gwynn could miss month
PHOENIX — Brewers outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. said he could miss up to a month of spring training because of a right shoulder impingement.
Gwynn, who was injured during an offseason workout, is scheduled to throw for the first time today. He will undergo medical tests before a decision is made.
“We’re like at a stalemate right now,” Gwynn said. “It’s a touch-and-feel thing. We’ll see how it feels when they bend my arm in different directions.”
Bonser likely to miss season
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Twins right-hander Boof Bonser is expected to miss the entire season after arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder detected partial tears in his labrum and rotator cuff. Bonser will need six to eight months to recover, leaving little room for him to return before the end of the 2009 season.
“Unless everything goes really, really well and . . . miraculous,” manager Ron Gardenhire said.
Indians closer Wood ailing
GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Closer Kerry Wood, who had a history of arm injuries with the Cubs, hasn’t thrown off a mound since last weekend because of an aching back and the Indians will rest him for a few more days before he pitches again.
• Third baseman Andy Marte cleared waivers and was sent outright to the club’s Triple-A Columbus (Ohio) affiliate.
