GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo.—Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario says he’s confident he’ll be exonerated of misconduct allegations over a romantic relationship with a jail officer.

Prosecutors are investigating a claim in an unsigned e-mail that the jail officer was promoted over better-qualified candidates.

Vallario said Tuesday the woman’s promotions were based on merit and not her relationship with him.

He told the Glenwood Springs Post Independent their relationship isn’t illegal but acknowledged “it’s not the best situation.”

Vallario says the complaining e-mail came from the account of another sheriff’s sergeant, but Vallario believes someone else sent it.

He says the person who sent it could face identity theft charges for impersonating the sergeant.
