SAN FRANCISCO — Intel Corp. sued Psion Plc over claims that the U.K. electronics maker is using a fraudulent trademark to block U.S. computer firms from applying the term “netbook” to compact laptops designed for fast Internet use.

Intel, the biggest maker of semiconductors, seeks a court order forcing the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to cancel Psion’s trademark because “netbook” is generic, according to a complaint filed Feb. 13 in federal court.
