DENVER—Colorado lawmakers are lamenting the loss of the Rocky Mountain News, which published its last edition Friday.

Democratic Sen. Evie Hudak of Westminster held up a copy of the newspaper on the Senate floor and said, “I am very sad and I am very scared, really, that our country is losing its interest and its investment in the printed newspaper.”

Republican Sen. Shawn Mitchell of Broomfield, one of the Senate’s most vocal debaters, said he wouldn’t even try to be eloquent.

“It’s sad. I’m sad. Goodbye Rocky Mountain News,” he said.

Senators applauded for Ed Sealover, one of the News reporters who covered the statehouse.

The newspaper’s owner, The E.W. Scripps Co., said it closed the operation because its losses were mounting and no viable buyer could be found.
