Weekend live!
Ballet for the masses
“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is one of those story ballets that are easy to like, featuring magical creatures, timeless comedy and world-class choreography. The Colorado Ballet performs it at 2 and 7:30 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Ellie Caulkins Opera house. Tickets as low as $19.
Living soundtrack
The Mont Alto Picture Orchestra offers a real throwback this weekend. The five-piece ensemble will play live as Buster Keaton’s classic silent film “The General” rolls on-screen. It’s a rare thrill for just $14. 2 p.m. Sunday at the Lakewood Cultural Center.
At the movies
It takes two
Yes, Joaquin Phoenix has a gotten a little weird these days. But before he went over the edge, he teamed with Gwyneth Paltrow for a romantic drama that scored with the critics. It’s called “Two Lovers,” and it’s out this week at the Greenwood Village Landmark.
Final answer
Can a movie that’s been out for 15 weeks actually make it back to the top of the box office? We’re betting “Slumdog Millionaire” — soaring off its Oscar win Sunday — will come close. Truth is, plenty of folks still haven’t seen this art-film-gone-mainstream. Now’s the time.
Stay home
Remember him?
“W.” Oliver Stone’s scathing look at George W. Bush’s presidency, recently came out on DVD. Sure, it includes a bit of revisionism and it may or may not be true. But it’s well-acted — and it’s fun to see famous actors play famous politicians. It’s rated PG-13.
Believe it or not
It’s a great video weekend for lefties (and we aren’t talking about which hand you use to sign your name). Rogue comedian Bill Maher’s documentary, “Religulous,” is also out for home screens. It’s smart, cynical and funny. Rated R.
