NORTHGLENN, Colo.—A father who beat to death another man believed at fault in a collision that killed his two teenage stepchildren has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Phillip Chavez of Loveland pleaded guilty in November to reckless manslaughter in the death of 62-year-old Glenn Ryburn of Northglenn. Chavez apologized to Ryburn’s family during sentencing Friday.

Police say an enraged Chavez got out of his vehicle and hit Ryburn 50 to 150 times after Ryburn’s Chevy Blazer rear-ended Chavez’s Ford Escort March 8. Killed instantly were Chavez’s stepchildren, 14-year-old Damien Noyes and 13-year-old Angel Noyes.

Ryburn never regained consciousness and died May 16.
