Two students at a Durango elementary school have been suspended on suspicion of possessing marijuana.
Details such as the students’ ages and grade levels were being with-held as the case remained under investigation, but the school, Needham Elementary, includes children in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.
Capt. Micki Browning of the Durango Police Department, speaking broadly, said it is not unheard of to have young children in possession of drugs.
Although not a common occurrence, Browning said, some kids have gone to the emergency room from drugs they pick up in and around the home, not really understanding what it is they have.
“Kids are curious creatures,” she said. “The sooner you introduce education against drug usage, the more successful you’re going to be against that problem.”
