GREELEY, Colo.—A Kansas man is dead after the semi he was driving veered off the road and rolled two miles west of Kersey in Weld County.

The Colorado State Patrol says the truck veered off eastbound U.S. 34 and into a field shortly before 4 p.m. Monday.

Weld County Coroner Chris Robillard says the driver, 53-year-old Jerry Watkins of Kingman, Kan., was taken to a Greeley hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say Watkins was wearing a seat belt and was alone in the vehicle.

The semi belonged to Paul Transportation Inc. of Enid, Okla. It was towing a trailer loaded with more than 44,000 pounds of steel construction beams.

The cause of the crash is under investigation; however, the patrol says alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors.
