LINCOLN, Neb.—Backup safety Major Culbert is no longer on the Nebraska football team.

Coach Bo Pelini confirmed Culbert’s departure Tuesday through an athletic department spokesman. Pelini did not give a reason.

Culbert backed up Larry Asante as a junior last season. Culbert played in seven games in 2008 and made 10 tackles.

The Harbor City, Calif., native ran for nearly 2,000 yards as a high school senior, but former coach Bill Callahan moved him to safety.

Culbert worked at linebacker and running back in 2007 before moving to safety full-time last season.
