COLORADO SPRINGS — A wind-driven grass fire that started Tuesday morning in a Fort Carson training area had grown to about 6,500 acres, or 10 square miles, by nightfall, Fort Carson officials said.
More than 100 firefighters were battling the blaze, which started on a training range as it was being used by soldiers about 10 a.m., The Gazette of Colorado Springs reported on its website.
The fire covered just 3 acres when firefighters arrived but was fanned by 25-mph winds.
No structures had been destroyed and no injuries reported Tuesday evening. Fort Carson spokeswoman Dee McNutt said the fire was 10 percent contained by 5:30 p.m.
