Xcel Energy said it has reached a deal with a biogas firm that will use cow manure and other agricultural wastes to supply renewable natural gas for fuel at the Fort St. Vrain power plant near Platteville.

Tarrytown, N.Y.-based Environmental Power Corp. will begin building the Weld County methane-recovery plant next year.

Xcel has signed a 10-year contract with the firm to purchase enough gas to generate 125,000 megawatt-hours of electricity per year, an amount that will power about 17,000 homes.
