U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet has joined other federal lawmakers from Colorado in the push for a new Veterans Affairs hospital in Aurora.

Bennet, a Democrat, said he sent a letter this week to newly appointed Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki asking him to support a state-of-the-art VA hospital in Aurora.

The project has been held up by debate over whether veterans needed their own hospital or could be served at various clinics.

“Everybody has now come to the view that it ought to be a stand-alone facility,” Bennet said, adding that he and other members of the Colorado delegation are waiting for the VA to “turn the dirt” on the new hospital.

The hospital will be at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, home of the University of Colorado Hospital and Children’s Hospital.
