Denver Post staff writer Jon E. Yunt takes a look ahead at the action in high school sports:
BOYS BASKETBALL
Take a glance at the Class 3A field of 32 and one thing seems to jump out. Last year’s title game foes, Aspen and Faith Christian, would meet in the Great 8 if they were to both win out Friday and Saturday. The Skiers will host their sub- regional and open with Bayfield on Friday. Faith Christian, which lost in the semifinals of the Metropolitan League’s tournament, has to travel to Salida for an opening- round game against pesky Brush. The winner there will play the winner of the Bishop Machebeuf- Salida game on Saturday.
Class 2A.
Year 1 of the 32-team bracket in both Class 2A and 1A had its naysayers, especially those opposed to travel. But the bracket looks good. And if you win two games this weekend, you can punch your ticket to Pueblo for the state tournament. The best region may be No. 6 in Florence, where Hoehne and the Colorado Springs School could meet on Saturday.
Class 1A.
Travel concerns have reared their ugly head. Granada and Holly will make the lengthy journey from the southeastern corner of the state to Dove Creek in the southwestern corner. Holly will play Ouray and Granada will tangle with Primero.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
3A Jaguars are purring
Jefferson Academy has given the Frontier League a dose of credibility. The Jaguars host what could be the most entertaining subregional and start with an opening-round game against Denver Christian, which despite its losing record is always a tough out. Get by that game and the winner of the Faith Christian-Classical Academy game awaits on Saturday. Elsewhere, defending champion Holy Family will dance with Trinidad for the right to match up with Basalt or Colorado Springs Christian.
Class 2A.
Region 7 will be played at Standley Lake. Lutheran (Parker), fresh off a District 7 victory, will host Hayden in the first game. Limon and Holyoke will play later.
Class 1A.
Gas up the bus. North Park, located in Walden (near the Wyoming border), will travel to Lamar to take on Springfield.
