Aurora police say DNA led to the arrest of a man in connection with a two-year-old murder case.

Daniel Jesus Lopez, 29, is being held in the Arapahoe County Jail on charges including burglary, sexual assault and first-degree murder in the February 2007 death of Yong Soon Kirk, police said in a news release.

On Feb. 16, 2007, Aurora police were called to check out an odor in apartment in the 1000 block of Dayton Street. Officers found the body of a woman.

She was later identified as Kirk, 65, who lived in the apartment. An autopsy showed she had been “severely beaten,” police said.

The case remained open until January of this year when police were notified that DNA from the crime scene had been matched to Lopez, who had pleaded guilty to drug charges in Denver in December 2008.

Lopez was required to give a DNA sample, which was put in the national database and linked to Kirk’s murder.

He was arrested Feb. 18.

Anyone with about the case is asked to contact Det. Warren Miller at 303.739.6117.
