LINCOLN, Neb.—The University of Nebraska, city governments, and other public bodies want to be able to use public resources to push their points of view on campaign issues.
On Wednesday, they urged a legislative committee to advance a bill (LB626) that would remove a ban on public officials and employees using public resources and dollars to express their opinions on candidates and ballot initiatives.
An example of the prohibition was the university’s inability to actively oppose a ban on affirmative action that was approved by voters in November.
The Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission opposed the bill. Director Frank Daley said it would make citizens compete against the same government bodies that they fund with their tax dollars.
