COLORADO SPRINGS — All you really need to know about Regis’ 88-45 victory over George Washington on Wednesday in Class 5A’s Sweet 16 at the World Arena is:

Regis began each of the first two quarters with 9-0 runs; the Raiders erupted for a 31-point second quarter; and the game had to be halted after the opening four possessions as it was determined girls were playing with a boys’ ball, which is larger.

Add in the fact that two Denver-area teams were playing out of town with perhaps 100 fans in the stands and it was a one-sided situation all the way around.

Regis (21-4) moved to within one game of advancing to CU’s Coors Events Center for its fourth consecutive final four appearance as senior Mary Bokenkamp blistered the Patriots for 22 points in the first half, 14 in the second quarter.

“It’s fun to get somebody going like that,” Raiders coach Carl Mattei said.

Bokenkamp, bound for Texas Tech, had it going from everywhere, from layups to 3-pointers (of which she made six).

“I don’t care if I score any points as long as we win,” Bokenkamp said.

Heritage 60, Grandview 44.

The Continental League power, so relevant throughout the decade in 5A, rose up again as the Eagles beat the Wolves in a turnover-filled (29 for each team) battle.

Ultimately, Heritage (19-6), which began to pull away in the second quarter, opened the second half with a 10-3 run that all but decided it.

The chief Eagle was Kim Lockridge, who scored 21 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and made it difficult for Grandview (18-7) when playing the point on the press.

Monarch 48, Air Academy 36.

Somebody had to do something for the Coyotes, who found themselves pressed late by the Kadets.

Up stepped junior Alex Evans, who, in a span of two minutes, scored inside, hit a 3-pointer, then grabbed a key rebound in which she was fouled.

She made one of two free throws and Monarch (19-6) had restored order.

“(The Kadets) kept fighting back, but we kept going too,” said Evans, who scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. “We started to do what we do best, defend, rebound and score.”
