A convicted terrorist who served 15 years at the Supermax federal prison in Florence has been deported via Denver International Airport to Sudan.

Khalid Dahham al-Jawary, 61, was escorted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to Khartoum, where he arrived Tuesday.

Al-Jawary, a native of the Palestinian territories who possesses dual citizenship in Iraq and Jordan, tried to blow up three buildings in 1973.

He entered the country on a visa obtained using a fraudulent Iraqi passport. Soon afterward, he planted car bombs at Israel Discount Bank, the Israeli Bank and Trust Co. and the El Al Airlines cargo facility at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The bombs failed to detonate.

Al-Jawary fled the United States before authorities discovered the car bombs.

He evaded prosecution for nearly two decades until he was detained in 1991 by Italian authorities. He was brought back to the United States and convicted on three counts of attempting to destroy property with an explosive device.

Al-Jawary also is suspected of having ties to a letter-bombing campaign that targeted world leaders in the 1970s, as well as the 1974 bombing of a TWA flight that killed 88 people.

Al-Jawary finished about half of his 30-year sentence.

A federal immigration judge ordered al-Jawary’s deportation on Jan. 24, 2001. He waived appeal of his deportation order.
