A 30-year-old snowboard instructor was killed Thursday afternoon when he hit a tree at the Buttermilk Mountain ski area.

Christopher Blaise Polk of Glenwood Springs had been an employee of the Aspen Skiing Co. for three years, company spokesman Jeff Hanle said. Polk was a native of Indiana and had served in the U.S. Navy, public records show.

Aspen Skiing Co. released a statement from snowboard coordinator Mark Wilkinson.

“Chris absolutely lived for snowboarding,” he said. “His love for the sport was infectious and he was universally loved by everyone who worked with him. He was an all around mountain guy and was always on the last lift up the mountain at the end of the day. He will be dearly missed.”
