DENVER—Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper is requiring all city employees to take an unpaid furlough day this month because of a drop in sales-tax revenue.
Sales-tax revenue in Denver decreased by 8 percent, or $2.5 million, in January compared with the same month last year.
The mayor said in an e-mail to city employees Friday that they’ll have to take a furlough day on March 27. Each furlough day saves the city about $1 million.
Sales-tax revenue is considered a key indicator for Denver because it represents about half of the city’s revenue.
Hickenlooper says he also has identified three other potential furlough days. He says the administration will continue eyeing sales-tax receipts and other economic indicators to determine if those additional furlough days will be necessary to keep the city’s budget balanced.
