SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Income-tax refunds are flowing again and Friday furloughs are floating in California.
State Controller John Chiang said Friday that he’s releasing nearly $2 billion worth of income-tax refunds, along with money owed in student aid, senior-care assistance and state contracts.
After Friday, most state workers subject to furlough will be able to choose their own two days off a month without pay. The move will save the state about $1.3 billion through June 2010 without shutting down government offices the first and third Friday of each month.
