DENVER—New unemployment figures for Colorado come out this morning, and officials are bracing for more bad news.

The state jobless figure from January is expected to be higher than it was in December, when the 6.1 percent unemployment rate was a five-year high.

Colorado is still better off than many states. A national unemployment figure out last week climbed to a quarter-century peak of 8.1 percent. Some 12.5 million people across the country are searching for work—more than the population of the entire state of Pennsylvania. Millions more have seen their hours, wages and benefits cut.
