GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A conservation group reports that energy companies own more than a quarter of Garfield County’s 800,000 acres of sensitive habitat.
The Colorado Wildlife Federation said Wednesday that some land owned by oil and gas firms would be protected by new Oil and Gas Conservation Commission rules. The rules are designed to preserve areas that are home to eagles, cutthroat trout and sage grouse.
Suzanne O’Neill of the wildlife federation says those species are in trouble.
The rules go into effect April 1 if approved by the state legislature. O’Neill says they would prevent more energy drilling on protected land but would not affect existing activity.
