COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A judge is considering whether a $17 million Colorado Springs church building belongs to the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado or a breakaway parish.

Both sides in a lawsuit over the building made closing arguments Wednesday. The judge isn’t expected to rule for at least four weeks.

Ownership has been in dispute since March 2007, when some members and leaders of Grace Church and St. Stephen’s left the national body over theological differences.

The breakaway group’s attorney says it has operated as an independent corporation since 1973, buying and selling property without approval from the diocese.

The diocese’s attorney says the state Supreme Court ruled in favor of the diocese in a 1986 property dispute with another congregation.
