BOULDER, Colo.—University of Colorado-Boulder Provost Phil DiStefano will serve as interim chancellor when Chancellor G. P. “Bud” Peterson leaves for his new job as president of Georgia Tech.

Peterson is expected to leave CU on April 1. He announced DiStefano’s appointment as interim chancellor Thursday.

The school says it will launch an internal search for candidates to serve at the top post permanently. DiStefano says he likely will apply for the position.

DiStefano was interim chancellor in 2006 during the furor over former professor Ward Churchill’s essay likening some Sept. 11 victims to a Nazi. Churchill was fired in 2007 on allegations of plagiarism and other research misconduct and is suing the university.
