When the 2010 census hits full stride a year from now, it could employ about 8,000 Coloradans, a bright spot in an otherwise bleak labor market.
The U.S. Census Bureau already has hired about 800 people in the metro area to gather addresses that didn’t exist during the 2000 count, said Cathy Illian, regional director for the bureau in Lakewood.
The next hiring round starts April 10, when the bureau will post jobs for managers and assistant managers to supervise new centers in Aurora, Denver, Greeley and Westminster. Those centers are scheduled to open in October.
Those manager jobs will pay from $21 to $28.75 an hour, without benefits, and last about a year. The next hiring round after that will add recruiters, $18.25 an hour, and clerical staff, $12.75 an hour.
They will in turn help hire “enumerators” who will track down households that didn’t respond to mailed survey forms.
How many enumerators are hired will depend on how diligent households are in responding to mailed surveys. Those positions, the majority of which will last for six to 10 weeks in March and April 2010, pay $16.75 an hour.
Census workers must be at least 18, pass a criminal-background check and skills test, and be available to work evenings or weekends when people are more likely to be at home.
“We want people who work close to their homes. They need a car,” Illian said.
