University of Colorado junior Gabriel Rivas won the men’s slalom at the NCAA Championships at Bethel, Maine, but the Buffs fell one spot to fifth in the team standings. Front Range rival Denver is in second place, only two points behind leader Vermont (484). CU has 439 points and lost some points because of a disqualification in the women’s slalom.

Rivas won with a time of 1 minute, 36.69 seconds, almost a full second ahead of the runner-up, New Mexico’s Petter Brenna (1:37.50). DU’s Leif Haugen was third. Rivas is CU’s first men’s slalom champion since 2000, when DU’s current coach, Andy LeRoy, took the crown.
