Gov. Bill Ritter, lawmakers and education advocates have introduced legislation that would allow students to earn a college associate degree while getting a high school diploma.

The bill was unveiled Friday at the Lowry campus of the Community College of Aurora.

Ritter outlined the program in his State of the State speech in January. It’s part of his plan to increase the number of college degrees being awarded to Colorado students.

The program is called ASCENT, an acronym for Accelerating Students through Concurrent ENrollmenT.
