Unlike thousands of companies, ServiceMagic is hiring.

The Golden-based firm — which uses its website to match prescreened contractors with property owners who have home-improvement projects — is looking to add at least a dozen full-time employees.

That’s after recently adding more than a dozen workers in areas such as sales, customer service, finance and technology, chief executive Craig Smith said last week.

In the past 14 months, ServiceMagic has added 100 jobs, bringing its workforce to about 950 — 800 in Golden and 150 in Kansas City.

“Overall, we’ve grown despite a down economy,” said Smith, whose 10-year-old company has just made its 11-millionth match between homeowners and contractors.

Programmer Tara Czutno is one of the new hires, landing the job “after three months — the longest it’s ever taken me.”

Smith said service requests are up, with homeowners “scrutinizing their decisions before they commit their money.”

ServiceMagic offers a nationwide network of more than 58,000 maids, plumbers, electricians, landscapers and remodelers. Homeowners call in or visit the website to explain what they need.

In return, homeowners receive a list of several contractors who have been screened for licensing, insurance and criminal history.

Contractors undergo screening and pay a per-lead fee. Reviews of contractors also are available.

General contractor Brevan Adams, who owns Accent Design Build, has been listed with ServiceMagic since 2001.

“About 80 percent of what I do is referral-based,” Adams said, “and ServiceMagic is a very consistent part of my business. It’s the only advertising I do.”
