A 1-year-old girl was hospitalized in critical condition and her grandfather under arrest after he backed a Jeep into the child at a Grand Junction home Saturday night, according to authorities.

Anthony Woods, 50, and several other people were working on the 1982 Jeep in the garage of a home in the 2700 block of Unaweep Avenue, authorities said.

At about 7 p.m., he backed the Jeep out of the garage as the child walked into its path, according to Colorado State Patrol Sgt. John Hahn.

The girl was unconscious and not breathing when emergency workers arrived.

Alcohol appears to have been a factor in the accident, officials said, and Woods was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, vehicular assault and careless driving resulting in injury. He was taken to Mesa County Jail.
