Colorado will receive $5 million in federal grants to remove dead trees along 150 miles of roadside hit by the large-scale mountain pine-beetle infestation, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Monday.

Fire-prevention projects will also remove hazardous fuels around private property, communities at risk and critical municipal watersheds serving Denver and the Front Range.

The Colorado grant is among $33 million in wildfire-protection projects being funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Vilsack said in a speech to the International Association of Firefighters.

Other states receiving funds are California, Florida and Oregon.
