DURANGO, Colo.—The New Mexico Department of Transportation is looking into an accident that occurred when a tire came loose from a trailer and smashed through a vehicle’s windshield, killing a Durango man.

Transportation officials want to determine whether the trailer met state standards for a commercial vehicle. The 30-foot long, eight-wheeled trailer was hauling a John Deere backhoe.

Forty-four-year-old Ron Newton was killed about 1 p.m. Friday when two tires came off a southbound trailer on U.S. 550, north of Aztec, N.M. One tire jumped a divider and crashed though the windshield of the northbound BMW sport utility vehicle in which Newton was riding.

Thirty-four-year-old Ronnie Jacquez of Bloomfield, N.M. was hauling the trailer.

No charges have been filed.
