The top Republican in the Colorado Senate said Wednesday he was unaware he’d agreed to speak next week at a gay-friendly restaurant that regularly hosts drag shows.
“I don’t care,” Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry, R-Grand Junction, said in an e-mail. “. . . I’m happy to speak to the (Denver Metro) Young Republicans at the venue they chose.”
Penry came under fire recently for not condemning remarks from GOP colleagues that some called spiteful toward gays.
Thomas James, president of the Young Republicans, said the group chose Hamburger Mary’s in Denver because “they have a suitable layout for a speaker-type event, and they have good food, a good location relative to downtown, and free parking nearby.”
Restaurant events include “Drag Queen Bingo” and watching parties for the TV show “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Tim Hoover, The Denver Post
