Colorado Springs employees stumbled on human remains while they were cleaning a sewer catch basin on Wednesday.

The city workers spotted the skeletal remains intertwined with debris in the catch basin near 2120 Cheyenne Canyon Road, police said.

El Paso County coroner’s office investigators and homicide detectives have so far found a human skull with an intact jawbone along with several long bones and numerous smaller bones and bone fragments.

Recovery has been slow as investigators sift through debris by hand, according to a release.

Recovery began at about 4 p.m. Wednesday and continued until dark. Efforts resumed today at sunrise and are still underway. Investigators hope to complete the recovery this evening.

The matter is being investigated as a suspicious death/homicide until further information is developed.

Anyone with information should contact the Colorado Springs Police Department at (719)444-7000 or Pikes Peak Area Crime Stoppers (719)634-STOP (7867).
