MIAMI — Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth was driving drunk when he struck and killed a pedestrian, according to published and broadcast reports Thursday.
WSVN-TV reported Thursday that unnamed sources with knowledge of the investigation said Stallworth’s blood-alcohol level was between .08 and .16. The legal limit is .08. The Miami Herald also cited an unnamed source as saying that Stallworth’s blood-alcohol level was above the legal limit.
Mario Reyes was struck and killed by a Bentley driven by Stallworth about 7 a.m. Saturday. Reyes, a 59-year-old crane operator, had just gotten off work and was trying to catch a bus when he was hit.
No charges have been filed against Stallworth, 28.

Furyk takes Transitions lead
PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Jim Furyk made two long birdie putts and a 10-foot par save on his final hole, which gave him a 6-under-par 65 and the first-round lead at the Transitions Championship. It was the first time he has held the outright lead since his last PGA Tour victory 20 months ago.
Stephen Ames was one shot behind after a 66, while Kenny Perry, Mathew Goggin and Jonathan Byrd made up the group at 67.
• The PGA Tour’s stop in Memphis, Tenn., will be known as the St. Jude Classic for 2009, dropping its reference to the Stanford Financial Group, which is under investigation for investment and securities fraud.
• Joakim Haeggman had five birdies in a six-hole stretch and finished with a 5-under 66 for a share of the first-round lead with Damien McGrane in the Madeira Islands Open.
Seattle wins MLS debut
SEATTLE — Fredy Montero had two goals and an assist, and the expansion Seattle Sounders FC made an impressive Major League Soccer debut with a 3-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls in the opener of the league’s 14th season.
• MLS executives and Portland, Ore., officials have scheduled a news conference for today about the city’s bid for an expansion team.
