LAKEWOOD — Rudy Martin is stepping away from Green Mountain boys basketball.
“It’s time,” the 54-year-old coach said Thursday.
Jefferson County through and through, the former three-sport athlete at Lakewood headed Green Mountain for four seasons and had 14 in command of Columbine, including the 1997 Class 5A championship. He also coaches golf, but is retiring from teaching, and Jeffco officials have frowned on coaches not in their buildings.
“I’ve just spent so much time committed to basketball that I haven’t had time to do the things I want to do, particularly around the house,” Martin said, “but the bigger thing is, I won’t be teaching there (next year).”
The Rams were 5-17 in Martin’s first year, 22-2 in 2008-09.
“Its tough,” Martin said. “I’m not saying I won’t coach again, but it’s time to close this one.”
