BOULDER — Alex Midyette, who is one month away from being sentenced for his role in the 2006 death of his infant son, was arrested Friday on suspicion that he had frequent contact with young children — a violation of his bond conditions and a felony.

Midyette, 29, was arrested at the Boulder County Justice Center just after 9 a.m. and was immediately booked into the Boulder County Jail on a $20 million bond. He previously was free until his sentencing hearing April 20 because he had posted a $1.5 million bond related to his child-abuse case.

Midyette, whose wife has been in prison for a year for failing to get medical help for their son, has been dating a Morrison woman since November, according to an arrest affidavit unsealed Friday. She has two young children and runs the Montessori at the Homestead day-care facility — for children ages 3 to 8 — from her home.

The woman knew about Midyette’s court case but “wasn’t going to stop seeing him,” the affidavit said.

The day-care center has been licensed with the state since 2004, according to a search of the state’s database of registered facilities maintained by the state’s Department of Human Services.

Midyette’s bond conditions specifically forbid him from having any contact with children under 18, with the exception of his nieces and nephews over age 2, and only then with adult supervision.

While the Morrison woman’s name was redacted from court documents, a search of records with the secretary of state’s office shows the school is registered to Christine Stonig, 44. She declined to comment Friday outside of her home.

Prosecutors began looking into the alleged violation after the woman’s ex-husband found out she was dating Midyette and notified authorities about the relationship.

The woman’s children referred to Midyette as “mommy’s friend,” according to the affidavit.
