Among the few winners of the recession so far: text messaging.

Americans sent 880 billion text messages during 2008, up 142 percent from the prior year, according to estimates by CL King & Associates analyst Lawrence Harris. That would indicate each American man, woman and child sent nearly eight texts a day, on average, based on the Census Bureau’s estimated population of 306 million.

Such growth, even during the recession, means Harris has a “strong buy” on Tekelec, over whose signal transfer points most U.S. text messages cross.
