COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs has received a $5.5 million cash gift from anonymous donor.

University officials said Thursday it was the largest cash contribution the school has ever received.

University spokesman Tom Hutton says the donation specifies that $5 million goes to benefit students and $500,000 goes to achieve the school’s strategic goals.

He says the money will be used for scholarships and other programs.

Hutton says the number of applications from students whose families can’t help pay for college is up 33 percent compared to this time last year.

The university, founded in 1965, has about 8,000 students.
