A Johnstown man hiking with a younger brother in the mountains west of Boulder sprained his knee, and a rescue group helped the pair to safety after darkness.

Joshua Kueckelhan, 26, and his 12-year-old brother were on a hike in South St. Vrain Canyon, near an area called the December Wall, when Kueckelhan hurt his knee.

Boulder authorities received a call at about 8:15 p.m. about the pair, and a rescue group was sent to find them, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

Members of the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group helped the two to safety. Kueckelhan declined further medical treatment.

One member of the rescue group was slightly injured during the operation, the Sheriff’s Office said. Details on that injury were not available.
