A 47-year-old local resident fell to his death trying to take a picture along Lookout Mountain Road this afternoon, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
The man was with others about 4 p.m. when he stepped over the guard rail to snap the photo and fell about 60 feet.
He was dead by the time rescuers arrived.
“We don’t know yet if it was the high wind this afternoon or if he just lost his footing,” said Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jacki Kelley.
She said there were no indications of foul play.
“It appears to be a very tragic accident.” she said.
The man was not named by authorities. Kelley said he had lived in the area for several years.
