The Rocky Mountain Rage won its first playoff game in team history Monday night, defeating the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 4-3 at the Broomfield Event Center in Game 1 of a Central Hockey League series.

The Rage was outshot 52-19, requiring goaltender Scott Reid to come through with a big game. Reid made 49 saves, including 20 in the first period.

Rocky Mountain’s Ryan McLeod and Nathan Gillies scored power-play goals in the first period. Colt King and Scott Wray added goals to give the Rage a lead in the best-of-three series.

The Rage will be on the road for the rest of the series, with Game 2 scheduled for Wednesday night.

Roadrunners’ Wagstaff an All-American.

Jesse Wagstaff, a senior on the Metro State men’s basketball team, was named an NCAA Division II Daktronics All-American by a vote of school sports information directors. He is the ninth Roadrunners player to earn All-America honors and the first since Mark Worthington in 2005.

DU gymnasts await NCAA regional.

The University of Denver gymnastics team, ranked No. 20 nationally, was selected to compete in the North Central Regional in Iowa City, Iowa, on April 4. The Pioneers will compete against No. 6 Florida, No. 7 UCLA, No. 18 Minnesota, No. 23 Iowa State and No. 28 Iowa.

• The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation named Air Force senior Abbey Rogers its gymnast of the year for a second consecutive season. She is the only Falcons gymnast to win the award. Rogers shared the award with Andi Dolinsky of Cal-Davis. Rogers and AFA freshman Jenna Dudley will compete as individuals in the North Central Regional.

Mesa State athletics expanding.

Mesa State will add men’s golf and men’s swimming and diving teams to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference starting next season, the school announced. The Mavericks also will add a women’s lacrosse team in 2010. The men’s golf team will be coached by current women’s coach Scott Hansen. The men’s swim team will be guided by current women’s coach Brian Pearson.
