Millions of consumers who received but never used government-issued $40 coupons for digital-TV converter boxes can reapply for them, now that a massive waiting list for the subsidy has been cleared, federal officials said today.
The coupons are intended to help defray the cost of the boxes necessary to convert analog television signals to digital. Customers who rely on over-the-air television and do not have newer, digital TVs need the boxes to continue getting signals as networks switch to digital broadcasts by June 12.
Customers who get cable or satellite television aren’t affected by the switch.
Those who waited too long to redeem the coupons, learning too late that a 90-day expiration date had elapsed and that the government wouldn’t replace them, have a second chance to get them.
