LINCOLN, Neb.—Archers in Nebraska are heading into the outdoors for the start of the spring turkey-hunting season.
The archery and youth archery seasons begins Wednesday. The youth shotgun season starts April 11, and the shotgun season begins April 18. All seasons end May 31.
Counts taken by rural mail carriers show a booming wild turkey population in the state. In the spring of 2008, the survey showed that the turkey population has grown 500 percent in Nebraska since 2002.
Hunters bagged a record 19,896 turkeys—on a record 33,922 permits sold—during the 2008 spring turkey season. That compares to 18,001 birds killed the year before.
