Discolored and unpleasant tasting tap water in northwest Boulder could result Thursday because of a pump test to be performed at the Maxwell hydro-electric generation station on Wonderland Hill Avenue.

Boulder officials say they are taking precautions to minimize the possibility of discolored or rusty water, including flushing fire hydrants.

But discolored water may still appear.

Although there are no health hazards associated with the water, officials recommend that laundry not be washed because the discolored water may stain clothing.

If the water is discolored, residents should run several cold water taps at full force until the water clears.

It may take several minutes to flush the discolored water out of the system. If the water remains cloudy, wait 30 minutes and run the taps again. The city suggests that residents collect the water and use it on plants or landscaping.

If the water still hasn’t cleared after two attempts at tap flushing, officials said that the city’s Drinking Water Program should be contacted at 303-413-7400.

Authorities warn that hot water should not be run. By running hot water, the rusty water could enter the water heater.
