Rebecca McKenzie was sentenced to 14 years in prison Tuesday for running over her boyfriend and his dog last year, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s said today.

She pleaded guilty to second degree-assault, cruelty to animals and one count of committing a violent crime.

Investigators said McKenzie, 47, waited outside the Golden apartment where James Anzalone lived. When he came out to walk his dog, Zach, a chow-retriever mix, she ran them down, injuring them both.

Anzalone suffered a broken leg and cuts and scrapes to his head and face. The dog had a crushed paw.

Anzalone told police that he had earlier asked McKenzie to leave his apartment after breaking up with her over her heavy drinking.

A witness and a surveillance camera attested that McKenzie’s sport-utility vehicle ran down Anzalone and his dog. An electronic data recorder in McKenzie’s car indicated a surge in the vehicle’s accelerator at the time Anzalone was hit, according to the district attorney’s office.
