BOULDER — A former Marine accused of faking his disappearance to avoid returning to his unit has paid back most of the cost of the extensive search that occurred after Steve Powers, a friend, reported him missing.

Boulder County sheriff’s officials say Lance Hering and his father, Lloyd, presented the agency with checks totaling $30,705 on Thursday.

The Sheriff’s Office says Powers has paid more than $2,300 in restitution for the search, and Lance Hering and his father volunteered to pay the rest.
