Many Colorado kids not already on spring break will get an early jump on next week’s vacations when schools remain closed today.

Jefferson County and Cherry Creek schools reported on their websites late Thursday that today’s classes are canceled because of the snow. Both of those districts are on spring break next week, as is Douglas County, which was expected to make its call on whether to close today no later than 4:30 a.m.

The Aurora, Thompson, Adams 14, Englewood and St. Vrain Valley districts will be closed today. Websites and phone messages will be updated, and TV and radio stations will be alerted.

On Thursday morning, Cherry Creek canceled the day’s classes before they began, as did Douglas County, Jefferson County and Aurora.

“Early dismissal is harder than a delayed start,” Cherry Creek spokeswoman Tustin Amole said, adding that schools consider the hardship on parents who must find child care unexpectedly.

Many school districts closed schools about noon Thursday, including Poudre, Thompson, Adams 14, Weld County 6 and Englewood.

Denver Public Schools, Littleton Schools and Boulder Valley School District are among the districts on spring break this week.

That means those students missed getting an excused day off.

“We’re stuck inside with nothing to do, where other people who were in school now don’t have to go,” said Alex Duran, 14, a freshman at the Denver Center for International Studies.

It’s particularly galling, Duran said, that last week’s weather was hot and sunny while kids were in class.

“I’m really bummed out,” he said.
